Verging on abstraction, this landscape is all about color and rhythm. Yellow lights of the city are reflected in the deep blue water while above, stars glimmer in the sky.

The two years Van Gogh spent in Provence yielded the most brilliant work of his career, including this turbulent view of a field ripe for harvest.

The Cafe Arles

Fritillaria Imperiale
Having arrived in Paris in 1886, Van Gogh would spend the remaining four years of his life producing the vast body of paintings that would testify to his genius. Here, his signature brushstroke, using dots and slashes of color and bright palette, reflect his creative spirit consumed with burning passion and need for immediate, unpremeditated expression.

Thatched Cottages at Cordeville, Auvers-sur-Oise c. 1890
As if knowing his days were numbered, Van Gogh painted more than 70 pictures in two months. He expressed joy discovering this picturesque village with humble cottages of grey and brown roofs. He paints heavenly in the sky, and as if to stimulate the texture of the thatch itself, changing the field into a green waterfall ‘ giving the whole scene an aspect of fantasy.

Irises
Brushstrokes of thick, opaque paint seem almost drawn, creating a variety of curved silhouettes bounded by wavy, twisting and curling lines.

House at Auvers
Quick strokes give the sky a slanting movement like a rain of color, while swirling plants introduce a rhythmical effect. Painted in Auvers in 1890 during the final year of his life, the piece is a study in Van Gogh's bold use of color.

Starry Night
Consider: this famous image was painted from memory, indoors, while Van Gogh, one of the great ‘plein-air‘ painters, was confined to an asylum.

Allee des Alycamps
With bold, sure brushstrokes and powerful color, Van Gogh communicates an intensity of feeling and positive energy. At once overpowering and uplifting, the viewpoint suggests the nave of a grand cathedral, and the folks who stroll the alley are sheltered by the trees on either side that rise, enormous, to the heavens above.

Red Vineyards at Arles, 1888
This glorious painting has the unique distinction of being the only painting sold by Van Gogh during his lifetime. Exhibited in Brussels in 1890, it was bought for the sum of 400 Francs, approximately $1,600 today, by Anna Boch, herself an Impressionist painter and sister of Van Gogh’s friend Eugène Boch. No doubt Ms. Boch found its fiery color and fabulous brushwork as fascinating then as we do today.

Still Life Vase with Twelve Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh
This still life is one in a series depicting sunflowers in all stages of life, from fully in bloom to withering. Van Gogh began painting them in late summer 1888 and continued into the following year. The paintings were innovative for their use of the yellow spectrum, partly because newly invented pigments made new colors possible.

Once thought to be Van Gogh’s last work, this painting illustrates the anguish, turbulence and loneliness that were closing in on him - a dark, forbidding sky, the dilemma of three paths and the ominous crows. Painted within the month he ended his life.
