Designing a Model Train LayoutTips to Get You Started
Designing Your Model Train LayoutIf you are new to model train collecting, you may wonder how enthusiasts create such elaborate layouts.
Whichever view you take, you will find that your layout is an ongoing art project. Many people spend a lifetime tweaking and perfecting their model train layouts. Provided here is a brief guide to help you get started.
Space PlanningIf you haven't purchased your trains yet, be aware that there are many model train scales, from the smallish HO scale to the larger O scale. Obviously an O gauge layout will take up more space than a HO one.You will first need to decide where your layout will be. Many experts recommend that you use a modular configuration with a width of two feet per section. This allows you to combine sections into a traditional four foot by eight foot layout or build an L-shaped or U-shaped narrow configuration. However, the sky is truly the limit. You might want to make your train climb from a wider table layout to a narrow shelf configuration or design something altogether unique. However, you should plan for each section to be at least two feet wide. Remember that each section will need to be fully supported, so brush up on your carpentry skills or ask a handy friend to help.
Track DesignOnce you have decided where your train will be, you need to decide what you want it to do. You will also need to figure out how to make the train do the things you envision.Unless you have a natural knack for engineering, this stage will likely involve a bit of trial and error. Today, many model train collectors design their layouts on the computer. You can use a dedicated layout design program or a traditional CAD program. You can also lay out your design on graph paper if you prefer a less high-tech approach. Make sure that your train will be able to handle any steep grades or hairpin turns you are planning to add before you actually do any building.
Building Your TrackThis can be extremely confusing to the beginner model train collector.Even experts often scratch their heads over particularly challenging track designs. Curves and grades can be especially confusing. You will also need to decide whether you want to use track that includes integrated roadbed (a hard surface on which the track rails lay) or whether you will provide your own roadbed.
If you still need help, consider purchasing the Model Train Help ebook, which contains a lot of helpful hints on layout design and construction.
Adding Scenic ElementsOnce your basic track layout is built, you will want to add scenic elements. This is your chance to personalize your design. You will find a mind-boggling array of available choices, from Swiss chalets to Old West saloons. Many collectors love the detail on these pieces and choose to exclusively or mostly use premade scenic pieces. Once you have become comfortable with the hobby, however, you may want to try your hand at creating some scenic pieces of your own. Again, the internet can provide you with a wealth of tips and tricks. Joining an online community can help you learn new methods of design and construction and share your knowledge with others. Although building a model train layout can seem daunting, it is really a step by step process. Take your time and ask lots of questions, and before you know it you will have the layout of your dreams.
