Bathers at the Seine (The Marsh) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Fine Art Hand Painted Oil Painting Reproduction on Canvas

Painted in 1869 when Renoir shared a house on the Seine with Monet and Bazille, this painting shows how Renoir used light and especially shadow to create the exuberance of a carefree summer day. Note the intricate brushwork that forms the shimmering water and cooling shade.

A testament to Renoir's genius at bringing together groups of people in believable settings, this painting also reveals the tremendous skill Renoir achieved during this period. The brushwork varies from bright, thickly applied paint to soft, feathery brushstrokes.

Other Masterpieces by Renoir Not Pictured on This Page

Spring Bouquet (Grande Vaso di Fiori)
Painted in the early years of his career, this glorious still life has a realism that leaps off the canvas. The quivering brightness of the spring floral arrangement responds to natural light, illuminating any wall upon which it is displayed.

Le Moulin de la Galette
In this painting, Renoir captured a page of history portraying an event in ordinary Parisian life with such rigorous exactitude. The working class crowd frequented dances in open-air caf‘s, amid windmills and gardens, such as this one at Galette. He paints a joyous crowd with laughter, movement and sunshine. It was Renoir‘s intention, however, to catch the effect made by light filtering through the leaves and playing on figures, that were themselves in movement.

La Grenouillere
This early work by the Impressionist master was the first such ‘snapshot‘ of daily life, full of joyous, shimmering color and flickering light.

Oarsmen at Chatou
The silky texture of Renoir's feathery brushstrokes mirror this languid, leisurely scene of a group of friends out for a day of rowing. Note the brilliance of the sun and water, the shimmering intensity of his colors.

Banks of the Seine at Asnieres by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
The exact setting for this picture has not been identified, but it probably shows the River Seine at Chatou, to the west of Paris. Renoir painted a number of 'open air' boating scenes on the Seine during the 1870s. In this example, the orange hue of the skiff against the blue of the river exploits the use of complementary colours. Since blue and orange are opposites on the colour scale, they become more intense when they are juxtaposed. The original oil hangs in the National Gallery in London, England.

Piviones is painted in a rich impasto with the most brilliant of colors, handled like a mosaic, with the colors dragged to produce a richly textured surface. The wall is a symphony of lavender with rich blues, mauves and citron tones worked into it. The emphasis is on the ornamentation of the canvas itself, with voluptuous, richly colored flowers, in swirls of color and expressive power.
