PostersColorful Wall Art
Posters have a truly long history, going back many centuries.
The popularity of posters really took off in the late 18th century when methods of mass production, especially allowing vibrant colors to be used, became available. Posters have always been used for advertising purposes, not only for products, but also for events and even to promote revolution. In Europe posters took a more artist turn and famous artists such as Henri Toulouse-Lautrec adopted the art form. Posters were so popular in France that they were said to have transformed the streets of Paris into outdoor art galleries. Posters are designed to quickly catch the eye and influence the onlooker. Usually this is done by the use of strong vibrant colors and short enticing text. Posters are great collectibles and are relatively easy to obtain. Original French posters from the mid-nineteenth century, the Belle Epoque, can still be had for reasonable prices. More current posters are even more widely available and affordable. Considering the uses posters have been put, it is also easy to collect around a favorite theme, such as circus posters, movie posters or even armed forces recruitment posters. For those with a political bent, posters have been used to advertise for political candidates as well as to spread propoganda.
Posters are easy and inexpensive to produce. They are usually printed on a heavy glossy paper and are meant to be hung directly on wall or telephone pole, although it is not uncommon to see them framed. Some contemporary artists have taken to making and signing posters of their artwork as a way to make it more widely available at low cost. Posters are a colorful way to decorate. They are very popular with college students who can decorate their dorms cheaply using them.
And like any other piece of art they are a way to express your artist self and surround yourself with color - at a very reasonable price.
