Claude Oscar Monet - French Impressionist - 1840 - 1926

The Tuileries by Claude Monet
The Tuileries by Claude Monet

Monet depicted natural color by breaking it down into different components, much like a prism. In his later works he went a step further, allowing light to dissolve structure. This bewitching image of the Tuileries gardens rising from the mists is a superb example of his genius.

Monet's great genius lay in his ability to produce widely different interpretations of common theme. Note the cool clarity with which he records his stretch of the Seine.

Other Masterpieces by Monet Not Pictured Here

A Path in Monet's Garden
This vibrant 'impression' of Monet's garden in Giverny is a perfect example of his artistic expertise. The sun-dappled path, overhung with leafy branches and lined with flowering beds, is alive with color, light, and inventive form ' an 'impression' of nature's beauty if ever there was one!

The Japanese Footbridge
Monet's little pond and Japanese-style bridge of Giverny were immortalized as the subjects of painting after painting. The Brushstrokes' technique captures not only his expressive colors but also the texture and dimension of a scene that endlessly beckoned him as the seasons, foliage and light changed.

The Seine at Vetheuil

Vetheuil in Summer
Monet's remarkable paint texture captures the light upon the water remarkably.

Boulevard des Capucines
Monet was fascinated with the rebuilding of Paris in 1873, alive with its orange ballons and happy, colorful crowds thronging the streets. We warm to his luminous play of light and many colors of snow - dashes of inspiration. "Never before has the elusiveness of movement been captured in its fluidity as in this extraordinary Blvd. des Capucines," said a critic of the time.

Sunflowers
This painting's vitality originates as much from Monet's own emotion and passion for the process as from the motif itself. Because of the masterful pattern of golden ovals, the effect is as decorative as it is expressive. These sunflowers were undoubtedly brought indoors from his beloved garden on a day when the bad weather made painting outside impossible.

The Tulip Field, Holland
This vibrant landscape was a particular favorite of Monet's, and never left his personal collection during his lifetime. Bold strokes of color and a glorious storm-swept sky epitomize the essence of Impressionism. The original oil work now hangs in the Mus'e Marmottan, in Paris.

Japanese Bridge, Waterlily Pond
Monet was happiest painting in his garden at Giverny. Note how this glimpse of his arching Japanese bridge provides a linear point of reference between the voluptuous garden foliage and its reflection in the water below.

The Seine at Argenteuil
During the seven years Monet lived in Argenteuil, he painted countless scenes of the Seine.

The Pond of Waterlilies, 1919
Monet's water lily work was his last great subject. This stunning canvas from 1919 puts the angle of vision near the water's surface. This work was painted toward the end of his life when his failing eyesight gave his work a softer focus.

Charing Cross Bridge

Corner of the Garden
Monet returned to this garden again and again, capturing its sparkling vistas with lyrical brushwork and clear, vibrant colors.

Boaters at Argenteuil
Monet's friend Renoir painted the identical view of Argenteuil, on one of their frequent painting trips together.

Lavacourt Sunset by Claude Monet
Pure mastery. The array of color of the setting sun, the gentle blue shadows of night approaching Lavacourt in the distance, the silhouettes of dark branches, all are mirrored in Monet's waters. Original oil work was sold at auction to an anonymous buyer for $1,872,500.

Impression: Sunrise
Are we not moved by the skies at sunrise' Always intent on capturing the change of light and movement, Monet brings us a sunrise to gaze upon forever. Painted in 1872, this is the canvas, which earned the Impressionists their name. Monet felt it indeed caught the effect he sought.

Waterlilies, 1906 - Miniature

Vase of Flowers
Monet began this painting in 1881-2, but confessed to having difficulties with large floral still lifes, and did not finish it until 1920. The Impressionistic color and light that came so easily to him in landscapes proved more difficult to capture in still lifes. However, in the daubs and dashes of color and the natural, almost-careless arrangement of mallow flowers, we see his ultimate and spectacular-success

Woman in a Garden
Painted in 1867, this early Impressionist masterpiece is flooded with sunlight. Note how the brightness of the lady's dress balances the composition, demonstrating the interrelationship between light and color.

Iris Fields at Giverny
One of the most breathtaking vistas in the gardens at Giverny was this vast field of tall, stately iris. The elongated canvas allows us to experience the same 'impression' as Monet - vibrant color and sparkling sunlight under a cloud-swept sky

Water Lily Pond
1893, Monet's genius inspired the creation of the famous Water Lily Pond at his home in Giverny, outside Paris. Unique, in that it was created entirely of the artist's own design, the fragile beauty of the pond became the painter's foremost subject during the last twenty years of his life.

Madame Monet & Her Son by Claude Monet

One of the loveliest of the many family portraits painted by Monet, wherein a brilliant luminance of light and color envelopes an ideal landscape.
