HO Scale TrainsStart an HO Scale Train Layout
What You Should Know About Collecting HO TrainsHO trains are the most popular model railroad trains in the world. The letters “HO” refer to the scale, or the size of the model in relation to the size of a real train. An HO train is 1/87 the size of an actual train. Since these trains are so popular, there is a wealth of information available for beginners and experienced collectors alike. Here we will provide a brief overview to help you get started in this fascinating hobby.
Choose a RailroadOne of the advantages of collecting HO trains is that there is a seemingly endless list of trains from which to choose.Eventually, you might want to collect train cars of different railroads or even invent your own through painting and decaling. In the beginning, however, it is usually best to focus on a single railroad company. This will help focus your collection into a pleasing whole. You might choose a line that you used to watch go by as a child, or perhaps one that has a special historical interest for you. Ultimately the railroad that you choose will influence your entire layout, so take the time to research various lines and choose the one that suits your imagination.
Buy Some TrackIn the beginning, don’t worry about your final layout.Purchase some track pieces that will easily fit together in an open floor space or on a table top that you already have. HO track comes in six basic types. Straight track and curved track are exactly what they sound like, rigid pieces that are either straight or curved. Flex track is flexible, allowing you to bend and shape it as desired. Switch track, also known as turnout, allows your train to change to a different track. Function track is a generic term for any specialty track. At this point, you will want to keep things simple. Hold off on buying fancy pieces of track until you have a layout in mind.
Choose a Power PackIf you buy a prepackaged train set, it will most likely come with a basic power pack. Otherwise you will need to purchase one.Power options range from simple transformers to elaborate computer controlled setups. Choose the one that best meets your needs.
Design Your LayoutA model railroad can be described as a sort of kinetic sculpture.Your train will provide most of the movement, although you may also choose scenic pieces that move. Consider your space, the era of your train, the mood that you want to evoke and other such details. Your layout will be an organic, evolving piece of art. Take your time with the design but do not be afraid to choose a direction. You can always change it later. HO train collecting is an extremely popular hobby. Later you may want to learn how to paint and decorate your own train cars and build your own scenic elements. In the beginning, however, it is best to choose from among the extensive offerings and take your time getting familiar with this fun and exciting hobby.
