Modern Collectible Dolls

A Great Way to Start a Great Doll Collection

Modern Doll Collectibles – What You Should Know

If you are a beginning doll collector, it can be easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer number of dolls on the market.

Doll collecting has become a popular hobby, making it easy to find dolls of all time periods, styles and cost at locations as diverse as flea markets, dedicated doll shops, toy stores and auctions.

While the constant supply of dolls helps to keep prices low, it can make it difficult to know just where to begin. Focusing your collection will help you to decide on a collecting plan that works. One of the first steps in focusing your collection is deciding whether to collect antique, vintage or modern dolls.

What Are Modern Dolls?

Modern dolls are those that were made in 1980 or later. Easy to acquire and generally reasonably priced, modern dolls are an excellent choice for beginning collectors.

They are also the best choice for those who want to play with their dolls rather than leaving them sealed in a box for safekeeping.

What Are the Names of Some Modern Dolls?

Modern dolls include some of the biggest names in dolls including Barbie, Madame Alexander, Cabbage Patch, Bratz, and American Girl.

Many of these dolls can be purchased in toy stores today. Some are also available from specialty dealerships such as the Babyland Cabbage Patch Hospital in Georgia.

How Do I Find Older Modern Dolls?

In addition to the current lines of modern dolls, you will probably want to purchase previous editions. No longer available in traditional stores, these dolls can spark a sort of treasure hunt.

The internet can be a terrific resource. Search for the doll of your choice at an online auction house such as eBay or read the classified ads at your choice of online doll collector forums.

Don’t forget garage sales, flea markets and “junk shops” as possible sources of modern dolls. Some may be in poor condition, but you may find barely-used dolls in excellent condition. It is best to know the approximate value of the doll before you arrive and be prepared to haggle.

How Do I Find the Value of Modern Dolls?

There are many price guides available both in print and online. These guides can help you estimate the approximate value of virtually any doll.

Keep in mind, however, that the doll market is relatively volatile. Prices may fluctuate wildly depending on supply and demand.

Never walk away from a doll you truly love because the price is “over book value,” and do not buy a doll you dislike simply because you are offered a “great price.”

How Much Should I Expect to Spend?

The price of a modern doll can range from just a few dollars to hundreds of dollars.

Prices are generally based on a combination of condition, rarity, popularity, beauty, quality of workmanship and dozens of other factors.

A doll with a well-known brand name will likely sell for more than a knockoff, but even this is never guaranteed.

If you have your eye on one or more relatively pricey dolls, try to avoid the urge to fill your space with lower-priced dolls.

Saving up for the dolls you truly love will help you to create a beautiful and unique collection of which you can truly be proud.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with supplementing your collection with lower-priced dolls.

The sheer number of available dolls can be overwhelming to the new collector. Focusing on a single time period, such as modern dolls, and working towards a collection of dolls that truly speak to you will go a long way toward creating the collection of your dreams.
