Comic BooksFun and Colorful Collectibles
Most kids enjoyed comic books when they were young. However comic book collecting has enjoyed a resurgence with adults and has become a popular collectible. Publishers have taken advantage of this and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of new comic book titles available.
Antique ComicsThese are the original comic books of our youth - at least my youth - with such classic titles as Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Thor, Dare Devil, Archie and more.Other classic collectibles are Mad Magazine from its heyday in the 60's, and the Classic Illustrated series, which translated true literature like "The Last of the Mohicans" or the "Count of Monte Cristo" into comic books, much to the relief of countless school children who just couldn't find the time to read the original, but could still write a book report or discuss it in class. Comics can be collected by title - all Superman, for example: By publisher - all Marvel Comics: all first issues: or just by what you really enjoy. With classic comic books, rarity and condition determine value. ComicsPriceGuide is an online source of pricing information for old and new comic books. Check any comic you are interested in for tears, loose pages, writing, bent corners or other imperfections that will effect price. There are some comic books that have additional value because of short print runs or contain errors - usually misprinted pages.
New ComicsIf you can't afford or don't like the classics there are plenty of new titles to collect. The good thing about this is you can start with issue one and collect the entire series of one title.Whether new comics will appreciate as much in price as older ones remains to be seen. There certainly appears to be enough of them on the market to ensure that rarity will not become an issue. Unfortunately, in order to preserve their value you should not read comics you plan to collect. Many come in plastic sleeves. You should leave them in those sleeves untouched by human hands. If they don't come with the sleeve buy one along with the comic. (Make sure that whatever sleeve you use will not harm the comic, by sticking to the ink or leaching chemicals. Any good comic shop shoud be able to sell you mylar or other types of sleeves that are guaranteed not to harm your purchase.)
